The practice race. Every boat discards race 1, whatever it scored there: Alice: 1, 2, 1, 1 — total=5. Drops the 1 in race 1, not the 2 → net=4. Bob: 2, 3, 2, 2 — total=9. Drops the 2 in race 1, not the 3 → net=7. Carol: 3, 4, 3, 3 — total=13. Drops the 3 in race 1, not the 4 → net=10. David: 4, 1, 4, 4 — total=13. Race 1 is also its worst → net=9.
